The horrific 9/11 attacks inaugurated a new era of violence in our global consciousness. Our nightmares shifted from epic wars between states (the preoccupation of the 20th century) to seedy, unpredictable individuals and groups capable of inflicting casualties on a terrifying scale.
In short, we feared the (atomic) bomb for most of the 20th century. In the 21st, we fear the bomb strapped to a back of an individual. War shifted from the potentially atomic to the atomized.
We take a look at some of the worst terrorist attacks perpetrated across the globe since September 11, 2001. Many of these attacks were inspired by or linked to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda organization. Others were unrelated and concerned with local/regional issues, but just as lethal.
