The Independents

Private tutor Ooi Boon Ewe, who tried to run in the 2011 General and Presidential elections, has declared that he would be back as an independent candidate in the Punggol East by-election.

The 71-year-old’s application for a Certificate of Eligibility was turned down in the Presidential Election and he did not submit his forms in the General Election after failing to secure enough assenters.

Meanwhile, Mr Zeng Guoyan will wait and see who the other parties unveil as their candidates before deciding whether to file his nomination papers.

Mr Zeng was the only independent candidate who received the Political Donation Certificate in the Hougang by-election in May 2011, but did not file his nomination papers.

He was reportedly disqualified from running in the by-election due to a fine for verbally abusing police officers in 2008.

Both have been issued Political Donation Certificates.
