The Battleground: Punggol East SMC

The Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC) is one of 12 SMCs in Singapore.

According to the Elections Department, there are 31,649 eligible voters in the ward, a 4.9 per cent reduction (1,632) in the number of voters from the 2011 General Election (33,281). This is likely due to names taken out because voters did not participate in the 2011 General and Presidential elections and residents moving out of the constituency.

Formerly part of the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, it was carved out as a single seat and was the only constituency that saw a three-cornered fight in 2011.

PAP's Michael Palmer won the contest with 54.54 per cent of votes while WP's Lee Li Lian garnered 41.01 per cent. SDA’s Desmond Lim, who received 4.45 per cent of the votes, had to forfeit his election deposit.

Day-to-day issues like cost of living and adequacy of infrastructure are among people's top concerns.

Some issues that residents want addressed include stalled upgrading works at Rivervale Plaza, shortage of buses services and connectivity to the estate. They would also like to see more childcare facilities and hawker centres in the ward.

Minister of State and Mayor Teo Ser Luck has been overseeing the Punggol East Constituency since Mr Palmer’s resignation.
