The home side were dismissed for 314 on the last ball of their 50 overs and India finished on 314-9 when Ravindra Jadeja hit a single of the last ball.
In the New Zealand innings, Martin Guptill made 111 and Kane Williamson 65 while Jadeja took two for 47. For India, Jadeja was not out 66 and Ravi Ashwin made 65 while Corey Anderson took five for 63.
The tie kept the series alive with two matches remaining after New Zealand won the first two matches.
