Sullivan, 28, who qualified for the men's 50m freestyle after winning the national title in April, has shoulder trouble.

The former 100m freestyle world record holder said it was a difficult decision to withdraw, but one that was made with the long term goal of the 2016 Rio Olympics in mind.

"It is very disappointing that I am having to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games team," he said in a statement.

"This wasn't an easy decision, but it has been made with the longevity of my career in mind, and with Rio as my ultimate goal."

Sullivan said that while his shoulder operation went well and he had done everything in training to get to the required competitive level, he was not race ready to compete at his best in Glasgow.

Abood, a member of the 2011 world championship winning relay team, originally missed out on a spot for Glasgow after a swim off with James Magnussen for the final spot in 50m freestyle.
