Left-arm opening bowler Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Glenn Maxwell led a strong Australian bowling performance on a pitch which had spent much of the previous two weeks under cover because of almost continuous rain. It was slow but offered movement for the seamers and turn for the spinners.

Starc, who started with a rare maiden in the shortest form of the game, took two for 16, while Maxwell claimed two for 19.

Veteran left-arm spinner Brad Hogg also took two wickets, although they cost 31 runs.

Opening batsman Quinton de Kock made 41 off 40 balls, with two fours and two sixes, but none of his team-mates were able to provide significant support.

Australia lead the series 1-0 after winning a rain-reduced second match by five wickets in Durban on Wednesday. The first match in Port Elizabeth was rained off.
