24-year-old National University of Singapore (NUS) law scholar Alvin Tan Jye Yee has been found to have uploaded sexually graphic pictures and videos of him and his girlfriend on their shared blog, Sumptuous Erotica. The site gained online buzz after it was featured in local technology forums recently. Sumptuous Erotica features images of Alvin and his girlfriend Vivian in various sexual positions at different locales.
The site also displays images such as bloodied sanitary pads and close-ups of genitalia, as well as an invitation for other ‘swinging’ couples to join him. Swinging refers to a sexual activity where singles or partners in committed relationships hook up with other swingers who are interested in casual sex.
According to local media reports, Alvin may be charged for breaching the Films Act for his videos if he enters Singapore. NUS did not confirm in media reports that Alvin was currently studying, citing confidentiality reasons. The NUS code of student conduct states that “offensive” behavior should not be a “feature” of its students.
Alvin took leave from school last year to start his own daily deals website Zuupy. He is known to be active amongst the technology circles in Singapore, with frequent commenting on local technology websites and blogging on his startup’s platform. The Malaysian said in one media report that he may return to NUS to resume his studies.
UPDATE: As of October 18, 2012, Sumptuous Erotica has been pulled down by Alvin and Vivian. The blog now contains a YouTube video link where the couple address some public queries. Responding to the controversy, Alvin said in the video, "We really appreciate the media attention actually because previously, we could do and say things and not a lot of people would care but now a lot of people seem to care about what we do and say... that feels good. We are not going to run away from the limelight. We want to get comfortable with controversy and learn how to manage media attention. I don't see how our lives have been negatively affected by this whole saga."
