As Mr Lee Kuan Yew turns 90 today (Sep 16), we look back at Singapore’s founding father’s most memorable moments.
Sworn in as Prime Minister
After the People’s Action Party won the 1959 legislative assembly general election by a landslide, its secretary-general, Lee Kuan Yew, was sworn in as Singapore’s first Prime Minister at City Hall on June 3.
Tens of thousands gathered at the Padang to celebrate Singapore attaining self-government. Punching his fist into the air, Mr Lee led the crowd as they roared, "Merdeka! Merdeka!"
"Once in a long while in the story of a people, there comes a great moment of change. Tonight is such a moment in our lives. We begin a new chapter in the history of Singapore," he said.
