Tax and economy
The debate began with the candidates arguing about their approach to the economy. Romney said that Obama had not done enough to bring the economy out of recession and tackle the national debt; Obama countered that Romney planned tax cuts of $5trillion that would only add to the debt. In a tactic that threw Obama off guard, Romney simply denied that he had any such plans, even though that's what his tax plans would do. This confused Obama, who started stammering and getting lost in his arguments.
Winner of round 1: Romney.
