The effects of the Bali bombings cannot be underscored enough: tourism was severely affected in the aftermath of the bombings, costing millions of dollars in lost revenue. Indonesia stepped up its security, cracking down hard on Jemaah Islamiah and other fanatic organizations. Furthermore, Australians were deeply affected by the attacks, as they had been the principal targets of the bombings - of the 202 victims, 88 were Australian.

Despite mounting security risks and the threat of a new attack, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is set to visit the site of the Bali bombings to mark the tenth anniversary of the event. “This is a moment of real significance for our nation,” she said.
