SINGAPORE: Motorists who drive Singapore—registered vehicles may have to pay higher toll charges in future when going into Johor Bahru.
Reports have said Malaysian authorities may be passing the cost of building the Eastern Dispersal Link, to Singapore—registered vehicles.
This is even if the motorists do not use the new highway.
The increased tolls may not apply to Malaysia—registered vehicles.
The Eastern Dispersal Link is expected to improve accessibility in Johor Bahru and perhaps boost tourism in the area.
But controversy has surrounded the project due to uncertainty over toll rates.
Singapore’s Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) on Transport said it would be illogical if Malaysia goes ahead with the move.
GPC chair for Transport Cedric Foo said: "The way forward is to free up the impediments between travel, for travel between the two states, rather than build up more impediments. So I think this would negate investor—confidence."
Mr Foo said if Malaysia raises tolls just for Singapore—registered cars, then it would be justifiable for Singapore to do the same for Malaysian cars, so there is equitable treatment.

Firstly I guess all Singaporean should unite!!! In times like this, we should just spend our hard earned money in our motherland. I used to pump petrol and wash car in JB almost twice a month. But after some thinking, is just no so worth it. The bloody jam that takes almost 2 hours of my life, the risk of getting my car stolen, being robbed and worst of all being forced to give coffee money to their so call "law enforcers". Why should we help with their economy if they keep thinking Singaporeans are SUCKERS? This should be a wake up call for even our Government. Poor and average Singaporeans are suffering in silence. We only dare to speak up during coffee and smoke breaks looking over our backs!!!! I believe if we want to better our lives, we have to speak up and let our government know what we want and need . We will repay with our lives to protect our motherland if is worth risking for. Above is just my personal view.
why they always like to picks on s'porean,
anyway johor is corrupt state run by their
without singaporeans , the iskandar project will sure to fail .
sure they will reverse this toll charges nonsense .
Stop complaining lah Singaporeans. Calling the kettle black. The Singapore garmen is also always finding ways to squeeze money out of us. When the Malaysian garmen doing the same its !#$%^?
This is not confirmed, so why make a big fuss.
Yes they sometimes implement some things unneccessarily, but at least when they know their people are unhappy about it, they amend. How bout Singapore? -_-
I guess it is up to an individual where his money is spent. If you feel that it is better to pay more for petrol on Singapore - just go ahead. We should also understand that Malaysian drivers pay more to drive on Singapore road. When their car enters Singapore, they pay SGD30 or RM72 on a daily basis.
We do not know what the new plan is like. But I feel that we should not complaint so much as the Malaysians are paying more to come into Singapore. When we shop in Malaysia, most of the things we buy are like at a 50% discount as compared to Malaysians. To enter Malaysia also we pay like RM2.60 per entry.
As long as it is still cheaper for me to shop in Malaysia, I would still continue to do so. Shop, having a meal, haircut, pump petrol are so much cheaper in Malaysia than in Singapore.
At least the Malaysian Government has subsidies for the Malaysian people (petrol, basic needs and food etc.). I have yet to see the Singapore Government do the same for its own people - the Singaporeans. We pay more in Singapore while foreigners pay less - less GST!
their bank account is dried..............
whole day nothing to do but to think of ways to find $$$$$$.
chi bao mei shi zuo !!!!!!
so s'porean should STOP going there , why not ??????
Singapore LTA should implement summons to Malaysia-registered motorists that has heavily mod-ed parts and illegal in Singapore. This has been an issue ever since a Singapore-registered bike was summoned by the Malaysian LTA which has an approved aftermarket exhaust system with cert to prove but still got summoned by the Malaysian court.
They should be talking about this issue rather than talking about raising the tolls to Singaporeans.
Do you know that at any one time there are 50,000 Malaysia registered vehicles on Sg roads? If your Sg vehicle met a road accident with a Malaysia registered car, you have great troubles to claim insurance on it. Even those Malaysian tour buses who are doing businesses in our country. If they are insured in Malaysia, not in SG, you cant claim insurance on them easily. So, why do we not charge Malaysian cars entering SG when SG cars will be charged going to JB?
Of course I will still go to JB................but to make things sweeter, Singapore should also make Malaysian registered verhicles pay similar tolls! The money can then be used to improve our roads.
My family and I will not go to Malaysia for anything if they increase the toll. I think Singapore and Malaysia should stop the "ping pong game". The people suffer, not the government.
JB is a wonderful place for food and other things. We go there very often as much as twice a week. We are not there to 'pump up'.
likely this policy is made with the impression of colours in view of those, who r M'sians, who work in Sg with SG-registered vehicle. Colours really play a large part in this country in everything we do, we have. thanks to those no brain policy makers.. GE13 is coming soon....will see the impact....
i believe a lot singaporean out there is staying in JB now as .Im sure they do have problem .For me i still need to travel to JB as currently im staying there.im not using the new link as totaly out of my way and i still have to pay the new toll.I believe is too much for me.Maybe be better save the money ,time and stay put in singapore rather to be trap in heavy jam and yet still to need to pay .
