HAVE YOUR SAY: NTUC sacks staff for inappropriate FB comments
What do you think of NTUC's quick decision to terminate Ms Amy Cheong?
SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has sacked an employee who posted offensive comments on her personal Facebook page.
It terminated, with immediate effect, the services of Ms Amy Cheong, the assistant director of the membership department, after establishing with her that she did post the offensive comments on 7 October.
Secretary—General Lim Swee Say said in a statement on Monday that the NTUC takes a serious view on racial harmony in Singapore.
He said the NTUC will not accept and has zero tolerance towards any words used or actions taken by its staff that are racially offensive.
Mr Lim said regrettably and rightly so, her comments have upset members of the public, including many union members.
Mr Lim, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, said the labour movement is sorry this happened.
NTUC has counselled Ms Cheong and impressed upon her the seriousness of her action.
Mr Lim said she is remorseful and has apologised for her grave lapse of judgement.
He stressed that inclusiveness remains at the heart of the labour movement.
The labour movement investigated the comments after it was alerted of Ms Cheong’s post about Malay weddings at void decks.
Ms Cheong later posted another comment, apologising for what she described as a "silly comment".
She said it was a "bad judgement" which she truly regretted and added it was in no way a reflection of NTUC and its work.

Perhaps she will be more tolerance and understand why our fellow Singaporean Malay holds their wedding at HDB Void Deck. The grassroots should take the lead in amending the misunderstanding by bringing her to meet a few wedding couples at their home so that the matter can be put to a rest. We are all human and when one is upset for reasons best known to themselves utter words that hurts. Take the USA Presidential debate as an example.
To me our Singaporean Malay wedding at void deck is a culture event in motion so is the chinese wake and seventh month prayer offering. MPs and RC should take the lead in amending community misunderstanding.
I have not read Ms Cheong's fb, so I am not qualified to comment on that, If it was the noise she was complaining about, that shows the immense stress that Singaporeans are going through nowadays and we have to sympathise with that.. I am Chinese and have been to several Malay weddings in void decks and I can assure Ms Cheong that "the noise" generated was nothing compared to the amplified noise during the 7th month auctions. My solution is to use ear plugs or leave the house for a few hours. It dosn't pay to offend neighbours. Live and let live. Cheers.
It's good that NTUC had taken it seriously. For her position and as a working adult, how could one make such a silly mistake. I think she is being let off too lightly.
One must always think before they act! Not do it and repent later. You will only make mistake in school while you are still in the educational system.
Kudos to you Mr Lim Swee Say!
Ms. Amy Cheong you have forgotten the pledge .
You apparently did not watch the National Parade.
Don't forget they're paying her salary.
It's likely NTUC has a code of conduct that employees like Cheong are to follow. If an employee falls foul of her employer's rules - and in this case Cheong's mistake was a severe one (criminal behaviour according to the statutes), and she admitted to making it - the employer is fully within its rights to terminate employment. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
Miss Amy, if you can't take the noise in the city that we are staying then you should stay in the mountains or jungle. Guess Miss Amy has yet to experience 'noise' from heavy renovation works from either your neighbors or somewhere nearby your house, the noise is even louder! Have more understanding and tolerance when you want to live in a world with different kind of races and nationalities. Achieving peace and harmony is the responsibility of every single individual.
hahaha..very good move. nxt move hand the case over to the police and get charged for Racism.
Just remember when you hit someone sorry is not the end and she cant get away from what she did. I personally says that is the right move to terminate her from NTUC further more she is an assistant director NTUC with multi racial membership. We know that the success of Singapore towards peace and harmony is the mutual understanding and respect to the other races. School now have done alot of effort to let the young generation into multi racial and it is a complusary to celebrate the day.
She embarrass the whole malay community and this is not acceptable and the malay community should take legal action. Goverment should step in to ensure that this people can be very dangerous can spark hatred in the community.
