In light of the protests and controversial World Cup $11-billion budget, we take a look at some of the unnecessary things rich people spend their money on
The Brazil government has been facing heat from protestors concerning the $11-billion budget for the coming FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in two days on June 12. In a country where the gap between the rich and poor show no signs of closing and with an estimated 2,500 homeless people in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil’s second largest city), demonstrators have taken to the streets yet again on Monday to protest that the money would have been better spent on public services like education, health and transport.
Still, the show will go on - Joana Havelange, daughter of Ricardo Teixeira (the former head of the Brazilian Football Confederation) said on her Instagram account that she wanted the games to “go off as well as possible…as however much was spent, stolen, already has been”. She later deleted the post.
