While student-teacher affairs have existed for a few millennia, Mary Kay Letourneau was the first female teacher to receive celebrity status for sleeping with her student.  Letourneau, then a married mother of four, met Vili Fualauu when he was only in the second grade. In 1995, she became his sixth grade teacher. The two entered into a sexual relationship in 1996, when he was 13 years old, and she 33. Letourneau was arrested in 1997 when her husband, Steve Letourneau, reported her actions to the police. As if the age difference between Letourneau and Fualauu weren’t shocking enough, the drama went up a notch when Letourneau gave birth that year to a daughter fathered by Fualauu. In 1998, police caught Letourneau in a sexual act with Fualaau in her car. As a consequence, Letourneau was sentenced to seven and a half years in state prison.

The two of them went on to have another child in 1998. In 2005, a year after Letourneau’s release, she and Fualauu were married. They have since co-authored a book about their relationship, which was never released in the United States.
